Are Those Yahoo Layoffs Starting To Roll Out Today?

After we reported on rumors that Yahoo plans to cut as much as 20 percent of its workforce a few weeks ago, Yahoo called that number "misleading." But layoffs do seem to be brewing, judging by the increasing number of tips we've been getting. On November 23, one tipster wrote that layoffs would be "officially happening after Thanksgiving but before Xmas 2010." Then yesterday, we started getting tips that the layoffs would begin today. Some product groups that seem to be targeted for cuts include Flickr and Yahoo Groups.

Richard Branson's 'Project' iPad magazine now hitting European iTunes stores

He just had to beat Rupert Murdoch, didn't he? Project, Richard Branson's iPad magazine, is now available in the iTunes store -- at least in Italy and the United Kingdom, since it's past midnight there. App is free, cost per issue is $2.99 for "a full month's worth of updating content." We suspect it'll hit US, too, the next few hours, but for now, those across the pond can read up on Jeff Bridges (audio and video interview), Earth 2.0, and a "well-informed Godzilla." Take that, yet-to-be-released The Daily.

College Kid Discovers False Murder Accusation While Googling Himself [Mistakes]

Most of us probably Google ourselves semi-regularly, right? (Right guys...?) But if there's one thing worse than discovering you're an online nobody, it's discovering that you've been wrongfully accused of murder by your local police department. How very embarrassing! More »

Imagining iPad 2

iPad 2 rumors have been making their through the internet pretty much since the day after the current iPad debuted but lately they’ve picked up considerable speed. Leaks have come from supposed manufacturers and suppliers, of course, but given the time of year and Apple’s refresh cycles for iOS devices to date, we could be [...]

Discover Windows Phone 7 apps with Bing Visual Search

Bing WP7 visual search
You can now browse the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace with Bing's Visual Search tool. According to the announcement, it only works in the US and UK -- but to make it work, after visiting the WP7 Visual Search, I had to change my location (in the top right corner) to "United States - English." Then I had to visit the Visual Search page again. Presumably this will also work if you live elsewhere, too.

The Visual Search itself is beautiful. The app icons slip and slide around the screen, and panels fade in and out with consummate smoothness -- it's powered by Silverlight, of course. Unsurprisingly, it looks and feels a lot like Zune -- and indeed, you can click through from any app to the Zune. From there you can install apps onto your phone.

The thing is, this tool in itself is nothing special -- but look at the competition! Apple's Web presence is alright, but it's hardly a joy to navigate -- it simply functions as a "preview" for those without iTunes. Google... well, take a look at the Web-based Android Market and decide for yourself. Microsoft's WP7 visual search seems positively awesome by comparison.

Nooka Zub Zayu watch has no hands, a name only Trevor Horn could love

Call us suckers for odd watches if you must, but there is something about Nooka's timepieces that make you take a second look. Keeping with the tradition of goofy "z" names (remember Nooka's Zot and Zoo from a couple years back?), the Zub Zayu is ambidextrous and eschews hands for something called the "time capsule" display. And if that isn't enough, it also goes into sleep mode to conserve juice. We just hope it comes back to life quicker than the iPod nano! Available now for $175.

Firefox Friday: a round-up of this week's Firefox releases and news

firefox 4 logoStop! Stop your Friday afternoon it's-only-two-hours-until-weekend procrastination! Focus on this tab for just a moment because I have a lot to tell you. We've covered so much Firefox news this week that you can't possibly have read it all. You need this round-up like you need a Friday beer.

Enough waffling... let's rock.

Firefox 4 Beta 7 has been released for Windows, Mac and Linux

Almost two months late, Mozilla finally squeezed out the first feature-complete Firefox 4 Beta. Beyond the fact that FF4 has a staggering number of new features, it's not clear why the browser is slipping so behind schedule. Still, if everything goes to plan, we should see three more beta releases followed by a release candidate around February or March.

If you haven't yet tried out Firefox 4, now's the time to take it for a spin. There are still plenty of rough edges, but my guide should walk you through most of the cool new features. Most importantly, thanks to the inclusion of a suped-up JavaScript engine in this new build, you'll quickly notice that FF4 is now as fast as Google Chrome.

AT&T says Motorola Olympus won't be available in November, then pulls post

Motorola Olympus AT&T Facebook

OK. We're about to have another conversation about talking to strangers. See, the fact is you're actually pretty unlikely to get a real answer out of an official Twitter or Facebook account if you ask about an unannounced device. And even if you do get an answer, you need to think about it a tad. So when Scott Duffy asked the AT&T Share page (that's an official AT&T outlet) about the rumored Motorola Olympus, he got the following reply:

"The Motorola Olympus should be available in December or January. Check back here for device launches ..."

Really, folks, don't read too much into that. Translated, it means this:

"November is almost over. So we're going to name a couple of months that aren't November."

Actually, AT&T's response has since been pulled. Does that lend credence to the initial response? More likely, someone realized commenting at all on an unannounced device wasn't a very good idea. It's very possible that the Moto Olympus -- or whatever it ends up being called -- could be released sometime in the next 60 days. We do have a pretty big event (that'd be CES ) coming up. But it's also just as likely to not be out by then. We'll just have to see. [Facebook via BGR]

Motorola Olympus hitting AT&T in 'December or January,' says now-deleted Facebook post

Excited for Tegra 2 to finally take the Android smartphone world by storm? Recent leaks out of LG and Motorola certainly suggest that NVIDIA's finally going to make some inroads with its silicon somewhere around the Gingerbread or Honeycomb time frame -- and that might happen sooner rather than later if a posting on Facebook is to be believed. Remember that shiny black Olympus (pictured above) that leaked last week? Someone in the captain's chair of one of AT&T's official Facebook accounts responded to a question about availability of the phone earlier today, matter-of-factly reporting that "the Motorola Olympus should be available in December or January." We would've been willing to chalk it up to confusion on an employee's part, but the post was later removed without a trace, and a follow-up with AT&T elicited a standard "we don't have any information to share about upcoming devices" response. The company claims the posting was made "erroneously," and we'll agree with them on at least one level: neither AT&T nor Motorola intended for that information to slip out today.
