Epic Makes Unreal Engine More Realistic for Small Devs

Epic Games has created award-winning series like "Gears of War" and "Unreal Tournament," as well as a popular proprietary development platform. That platform, Unreal Engine, doesn't only appear in Epic titles, though. The company has allowed other developers to license it -- for a fee. Now, it's opening up that platform to independent developers with no upfront cost.

Radeon HD 6990 pictured, GeForce GTX 590 rumored for PAX East 2011 reveal

Multiple cores are old hat, particularly in the GPU world where you can have hundreds of simultaneous processing units working in concert, but multiple GPUs on the same PCB, that's still exciting territory (not least because of the crazy thermal and power requirements that go with it). AMD and NVIDIA are set to clash horns on this field of battle once again, fishing for mindshare as much as they are for high premium sales, with the Radeon HD 6990 and GeForce GTX 590, respectively. The former has already slipped out of the shadows of mystery to reveal a size slightly longer than an A4 sheet of paper, while the latter is being rumored for an unveiling at the PAX East 2011 gamer gathering. Expected GTX 590 specs include 1024 total CUDA cores, 3GB of onboard RAM with dual 384-bit memory controllers, and three DVI outputs for some single-card 3D Vision Surround gaming. This year's PAX East is kicking off on March 11th and AMD is also looking very close to launching its part, so you should need no more than a couple of weeks' worth of patience before everything about the latest and greatest from both camps is known.

Modder turns RROD-stricken Xbox 360 into PS3 arcade controller, awesomeness

In the most recent of Xbox 360 hacks, a modder named Morris has crafted a PS3 controller out of none other than -- as ironic as this may seem -- a dead Xbox 360. That's right, somewhere out there, a PlayStation 3 has slain its mortal enemy, mercilessly gutted the internals and now has a modded Xbox as its eternal slave. The case contains all of the buttons you need to partake in a classic beat-'em-up -- a joystick, the four PlayStation buttons, R1 and R2. There's plenty more to gander at in the source link and enough in the way of detail and instruction to get started on your own arcade stick too.

Reporter Takes Box Cutter to the Wrist In the Name of Shark Suit Testing [Watch This]

Download official Android 3.0 Honeycomb wallpaper images

android 3.0 honeycomb wallpaper images
As is usually the case with new Android SDK releases, various bits and pieces have been ripped out and shared with the world thanks to an enthusiastic and ambitious dev community. Over at the Android Central forums, Alex Dobie has shared nine new wallpaper images which are bundled in the tablet-friendly Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK.

The images are fairly high-res, too, at 1980x1408 pixels -- so they may even be a good fit for your desktop or laptop if you want to show off your affinity for Android.

You'll need to register with Android Central before you can access the download link, or you can wait patiently for the images to be posted elsewhere. They'll more than likely be mirrored a dozen different places by the time you read our post, after all -- so feel free to share alternative download locations in the comments!

Update: we've uploaded the wallpapers to our own Web hosting -- feel free to download them after the break. Click a thumbnail to see the full-size version.

HTC Merge first hands-on! (video)

HTC just rolled in to set up for our San Francisco reader meetup tonight, and what's this? They brought a brand-new HTC Merge with them. No one's talking about what carrier this interesting Android slider is going to launch on yet, but that Verizon-red earpiece and search button aren't exactly coy. Apart from that, it's pretty much exactly the device we've seen leaked all over for months now -- a really nice landscape Android slider with a solid keyboard. More pics in the gallery, and a video after the break!

Lavasoft Rogue Gallery puts fake antivirus and rogue applications on display

It's hard for less-savvy computer users to stay out of trouble on the Internet, and part of the problem is that they just don't know how to identify potential threats. Fortunately, there are plenty of great online resources you can use, or point your friends and family to. We've already covered the excellent Facecrooks, which helps users avoid trouble on Facebook, and today we're taking a look at the Lavasoft Rogue Gallery.

Lavasoft is the company behind Ad-Aware, the granddaddy of adware removal apps. Though its malware cleanup crown has been snatched away by Malwarebytes in recent years, Ad-Aware remains enormously popular -- and Lavasoft provides a nice public service by displaying the fake antivirus (fakeAV) and rogue applications it discovers for all to see.

Rogue applications are those nasty programs which appear to be useful utilities like antivirus or Windows tune-up tools. In reality, of course, they're some of the nastiest threats around. They're easy enough to spot if you know what to look for, so spending a few minutes going through the Lavasoft Rogue Gallery is highly recommend to anyone who needs a bit of help avoiding Internet dangers.

Internet Explorer 9's most useful keyboard shortcuts

Microsoft has been at pains to point out just how slimline the IE9 interface is -- it's a whole six pixels more svelte than Chrome! -- but its minimalistic sparseness comes at a price: you need a magnifying glass to see the buttons, and almost everything is hidden behind at least two or three mouse clicks.

Fortunately, there's plenty of keyboard shortcuts:
  • Alt+C -- pop open the Favorites/Feeds/History window
  • Alt+X -- pop open the Tools (Cog icon) menu
  • Alt+Left/Right -- move back/forward through your history
  • Ctrl+L -- sets your keyboard focus to the One Bar (address bar), and selects the current URL (ripe for Ctrl+C!)
  • Ctrl+Shift+L -- if you have a URL in your clipboard, this shortcut loads it; if you have a text string in your clipboard, it searches your default search engine for it (very cool)
  • Ctrl+D -- add the current page to your Favorites (bookmarks)
  • Ctrl+B -- organize your Favorites
  • Ctrl+J -- opens the Download Manager
  • Ctrl+K -- duplicates your current tab
  • Ctrl+Alt+P -- pop open an InPrivate Browsing window
  • Alt+N -- give focus to the new bottom-hugging Notification bar (then Enter for the first button, or Esc to dismiss it)
  • F12 -- open the (fantastic) developer console (and once it's open, and has focus, Alt+7/8/9/Q changes the rendering mode)
All of the usual key combos work, obviously: Ctrl+T, Ctrl+W, Ctrl+N, Ctrl +, Ctrl -, and so on.

For more IE9 tips, see our tips index, or read our complete IE9 guide.
