So, the other day I wrote about a website that helps you figure out whether or not it's raining somewhere. It turns out that this is a whole category of websites, but I think I just found the most useful "minimalistic information" website yet: It's called Has the Large Hadron Collider destroyed the world yet, and seeks to answer just that question. At the time of writing, the answer is "Nope" - we're still here.

It's a marvel of minimalism, really. If you poke around the source you can see it uses JavaScript to figure out whether or not the world has ended yet, but it'll actually work even if JavaScript is disabled on your browser. I think it's iPad-friendly too, and should even work on my Kindle and my crappy ancient Nokia phone with its WAP browser. It also has the longest domain name I've posted on Download Squad to date. Kudos!

Gibson announces $5,500 Firebird X robot guitar

Gibson's been riding the wave of tech for quite a while now -- launching several "robot" guitars featuring functions such as fully automated tuning systems. For that, we give them credit: guitar purists are a tough bunch, and one that is most definitely resistant to change. So we can't help but welcome (on principle alone) the Firebird X, even if our standard Firebird is way, way better looking. The Firebird X -- which will retail for about $5,500 when it launches in December -- features the robo-tuning head found on the Dark Fire, and a seriously sick range of built-in effects, including modulation, echo, reverb, compression, EQ, and distortion. Hey, purists may grimace at that non-Firebird headstock, but let them: you'll be jamming with some sweet effects.

Is Gulf Seafood Safe To Eat? Feds? New Test Says Yes, Not Convincingly

More than 9,000 square miles of U.S. federal Gulf waters are closed to commercial and recreational fishing today thanks to the BP oil spill. However, government offices today claimed that seafood from the Gulf is basically safe to consume, based on the results from their latest battery of tests. You gonna eat that? Companies responsible for the environmental disaster spilled about 5 million barrels of oil, accidentally. They poured about 2 million gallons of oil dispersants into the Gulf waters on purpose, though. The dispersants were supposed to break up the wildlife-choking slicks into droplets that could be more easily digested by oil-eating bacteria. Or at least, they'd make the water look more like water and less like tar...
