Playboy releases over 650 issues spanning 56 years on a big, black hard drive

Last Christmas it was 120 years of National Geographic, and this year it's an equally beautiful but very different vista: 56 years of Playboy on a 250GB hard drive. That link is safe to click, but the online shop linked from there isn't. There are also some 'free samples,' if you want to check out the 'digital magazine' experience before you buy.

The archive, which costs $299.95, features every single issue of the magazine from December 1953 through to December 2009, from Marilyn Monroe and Ursula Andres, to Drew Barrymore and Denise Richards. This isn't just an archive of the Playmates, either: all of the articles and adverts are included too.

Say hello to the new Virgin Media TV powered by TiVo, a device that while "inspired" by the Premiere is much more than just the same old box with new stickers. Set to debut in the UK in mid-December, it packs a 1TB HDD, but trumps TiVo's previous efforts by promising a third tuner (to be enabled by a software update in 2011), an internal cable modem for downloading without cutting into your existing broadband speed and ties into catch-up TV just in case you forget to DVR something. While the box itself has a slick new design, the traditional peanut remote hasn't changed and neither have the menus as seen by these screenshots. Interested parties should squirrel away £199 (plus £40 for installation and £26.50 for the XL TiVo package) and hit the source link to queue for purchase.

Remember The Fingerist, the guitar headstock-themed speaker and case for your iPhone or iPod touch? You know, the one with the shoulder strap for public (and private) performances with all of your favorite music making apps? Well, it seems that it's finally available in the states. Indeed, there has been so little fanfare behind this announcement that the company responsible, Evenno, hasn't even acknowledged it on its site. But don't worry: we found this bad boy for $150 on Amazon. And if that's not enough, iLounge has done a series of hands-on photos (see the More Coverage link, below). Or, if you're like us, you can skip the thing altogether and groove to Rick Wakeman after the break. We do have one more thing to say about the Fingerist, however: at least it's not endorsed by this guy.

Firesheep comes to webOS

It's not as fast or pretty as its desktop cousin, but an ambitious tinkerer has still managed to port Firesheep to webOS. Yes, all the Wi-Fi tomfoolery that made you shudder as a Firefox extension can run on your Palm Pre.The man who performed the shoehorning -- who happens to be called Sebastian but probably isn't our Sebastian-- has shared a YouTube video of his handiwork which you can check out after the break.

Homebrew and hacking is part of the fun of owning a webOS device, so it's not really a surprise to see Firesheep running -- and it's pretty darn cool, if only as a proof-of-concept.

Firefox 4 UI update brings snazzy, new alert pop-ups

Lest you think blogger Long Zheng is all about Microsoft apps, our Australian friend has a keen eye on all kinds of bleeding-edge software. -- including Firefox 4. Today he noticed a change in the Firefox 4 nightly build -- sexier, semi-translucent alert dialogs, complete with a blur effect to obscure the webpage content in the background.

The new alerts fit well with Firefox 4's default Strata theme, and they definitely look nicer than those with the native Windows chrome. The blur effect is also a nice tweak, and it helps ensure your focus goes where it should when an alert box appears -- to the alert.

Download a nightly build of Firefox 4 to see the alerts in action. To test, just visit a page like this one and paste javascript:window.alert("Downloadsquad copypasta for testing shiny new Firefox 4 alerts") in your address bar and hit the enter key.
