Verizon Buys #CyberMonday From Twitter

It looks like Verizon has bought the promoted trend "#CyberMonday" to mark the Monday after Black Friday and Thanksgiving when consumers look to the web for exclusive holiday deals. This buy follows another significant Promoted Trend this past Friday, when Target bought "#BlackFriday" on Twitter. As with any purchased Promoted Trend on Twitter, when users click on CyberMonday, they will be see a sponsored Tweet from Verizon, which states "Starting today, Verizon's giving you 24 days of Seasonal Surprises! Unwrap an exclusive deal now!" The Tweet contains a link to the company's "Seasonal Surprises" campaign, which encourages users to Tweet Verizon's message or post the message on Facebook to unlock an exclusive deal.

Is Twitter Predicting Contestant Exits From The X-Factor?

Glancing at my Twitter stream of an evening, I've been surprised at the number of Geeks watching The X-Factor TV show (in the UK) which is similar to American Idol . But then I guess it lends itself extremely well to witty asides on Twitter. This actually makes the show worth watching, much more for the social media discussions around it than the show itself. It's like being at a football match where the crowd's chants are more entertaining than the game. If there is a business model for bland, manufactured TV I guess this is it. So we make no apology for passing on the news that social media monitoring company Brandwatch is claiming that it can predict who is about to exit The X-Factor TV "musical competition" based on what's being said about it on Facebook and Twitter. I asked what else they track, but sure enough, Twitter tops the list as a data source.

webOS 2.0 coming soon to Pre, Pixi, and Pre Plus

With HP Developer Days in full swing, we're hoping there's plenty of good webOS-related news to report on in the coming days. One huge announcement has already been made, and it's great news for owners of the Pre, Pixi, and Pre Plus: webOS 2.0 will soon be available for your devices.

That's good news for developers as well. webOS 2.0 is a very different beast from its predecessor, so making the update available to all HP Palm devices will help prevent the kind of fragmentation which Android developers have to deal with.

HP didn't give a specific date for the release -- "in the coming months" is all we've got to go on for now.

Facebook launches 'next generation messaging', sounds a lot like Google Wave

Extolling the virtues of what messaging should be -- seamless, instant, personal and simple -- Mark Zuckerberg has just launched what sounds just like a socially-aware version of the now-defunct Google Wave.

It is not email -- though you will get a username@facebook.com email address -- but it handles email. It's a messaging platform that interweaves all of your incoming messages, be they SMSes, emails or instant messages into one big dashboard.

The most exciting prospect is the idea of a 'social inbox', which is basically an automatic email whitelist. Instead of being forced to hand-create lists of 'favourite' friends that skip your spam filters, Facebook's new messaging platform will automatically filter mail from your Facebook friends, your friends-of-friends, and so on.

Caltech research could lead to quantum hard drives, networks, parallel universes

Quantum anything has typically fallen into our oft-used category of 'awesome things that'll never happen,' but if a crew of researchers at the California Institute of Technology have anything to say about it, they'll soon be changing the fortunes of that segment. The team has recently demonstrated quantum entanglement for a quantum state stored in four spatially distinct atomic memories, and while that probably just blew your mind a little bit, the breakdown is fairly interesting. Essentially, they've uncovered a quantum interface between the atomic memories, which is said to "represent something akin to a computer hard drive for entanglement." If extended, it could pave the way toward quantum networks, and in turn, massive webs of quantum computers. We're obviously decades out from understanding what this all means for the common computer user, but just remember this: "for an entangled quantum system, there exists no objective physical reality for the system's properties." And you thought The Matrix was deep.
